As many of you are aware, the Catholic Diocese of Lansing agreed in late 2009 to purchase from General Motors the Service Parts Organization building on Hill Road near I-475. This purchase would have led to the relocation of Powers Catholic High School from its current site to the SPO building. The spread of this exciting news has energized the Powers community. The flow of generous contributions reminds us again how dearly the Catholics of Genesee County treasure Powers Catholic High School.
There has been a new development, however. General Motors has decided to stay in its SPO facility. This is welcome news to everyone in the region, and the Catholic Diocese of Lansing did not hesitate in giving its assent. It appears that about 800 direct GM jobs, and many additional indirect jobs, will be preserved.
And yet the disappointment in the Powers community is undeniable. Hopes were raised. Plans were drawn. Dreams seemed close to fulfillment. Now, even as we acknowledge the benefits of GM’s decision, we are left to wonder and to pray. We will continue to work with General Motors to help realize our dream. And as we do in every hour of our lives, we place our hopes and our lives in the hands of Jesus.
Where do we go from here? First of all, we know that Powers is an excellent Catholic high school. No matter where it is located, the faculty, staff, family members, and students will contribute to a better world and a more vibrant Church. Our donors, anticipating this great opportunity, have been most generous. To determine where we go from here will require wisdom from the Holy Spirit and continued good will and support from all who have deep affection for Powers Catholic High School. Please pray for that outpouring of the Holy Spirit, who makes all things new.
Every year around this time Conference staff works with members of both the House of Representatives and Senate to pass a Resolution recognizing Catholic Schools Week. Today the state Senate passed SR 112, sponsored by Sen. Wayne Kuipers (R-Holland), and yesterday the House passed HR 204, sponsored by Rep. Marc Corriveau (D-Plymouth). The recent apprehensions about the spread of the H1N1 flu virus have caused Lumen Christi Teacher Mrs. Paulette Burgess some extra angst this year. Lumen Christi’s school-wide annual service project is normally an enormous undertaking, but this year has proven to be especially difficult. Last year, the entire student body was able to leave school and go out into the community to perform two hours of service. This year, with extra precautions being taken by many of the local retirement communities, the locations that the students are able to volunteer at this year have been significantly reduced. Still, Lumen Christi’s annual service project will move ahead, albeit with some adjustments because unless we are careful, Thanksgiving can easily miss the original intent of the holiday - to gather with others and give thanks to God! On Wednesday, November 25, 8:30-10:30 AM, Lumen Christi is planning their 3rd annual Thanksgiving Service Project. “While Thanksgiving is not traditionally a Christian holiday, the way we, as Christians, prepare ourselves to give thanks to God reflects our commitment to our faith,” explains Principal Pat Kalahar. “Our celebrations can begin with serving others as we extend the love of Christ beyond our own Thanksgiving tables.” This year about half of our students will have the opportunity to give two hours of service at different locations throughout our community. The students, accompanied by faculty members, will visit the Interfaith Shelter, St. Vincent de Paul, Hospice of Jackson, Goodwill Industries, The Salvation Army, DisAbility Connection, The American Cancer Society, The American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Jackson County Dept. of Aging, Jackson Animal Shelter, Great Lakes Hospice, various elderly and care homes, food pantries, churches and rectories, and various schools and childcare facilities. Those students will spend the morning reading, playing bingo, singing, cleaning and organizing, and simply visiting with people who may not have another visitor during the holiday season. The other half of our students will remain at school and perform on-campus service projects. They will be making fleece blankets for the Catholic Charities Community Linen Closet and making cards and writing letters for hospitalized soldiers. Last year our students performed over 1000 hours of community service! “It is important to reinforce our mission of developing Christian values in each student by continually seeking to develop our spirit of service,” observes Mrs. Paulette Burgess, Religion teacher at Lumen Christi. “We want our students to see serving as a privilege; to engage in Christian generosity by helping people unfamiliar to them and to provide for those in need. This is an opportunity for us to do God’s work in our own community.”
